  1. Capital of the North

York Museums Trust is featuring some of the most prestigious and significant medieval objects ever found in Britain in a new exhibition from November to the New Year.

The north was ruled from York in medieval kingdoms. The Council of the North was established at Kings Manor after the dissolution of the monasteries and this new exhibition will tell the extraordinary story of how great swathes of the country were once ruled from within York’s walls.
From the ravages of war the city went on to flourish in a golden age of innovation, religion and trade.

Through it all York was the Capital of the North.

The new exhibition runs from Thursday 7th November 2016 until 31st December 2016.

Visitors can find out more through specially-made films within the exhibition and families will be able to trace the stories of key historical figures through our fun cartoon characters, and try their hand at our fantasy jousting computer game!
